Aceh Tamiang, Indonesia — In commemoration of World Press Freedom Day observed on May 3, the District Executive Board of the Indonesian Advocacy Body (DPC BAI) Aceh Tamiang reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a free, independent, professional, and integrity-driven press. The statement was delivered at the DPC BAI Aceh Tamiang Secretariat, Satelit Graha Hamlet, Kebun Tanah Terban Village, Karang Baru District, Aceh Tamiang Regency, Indonesia on Monday, May 4, 2026.
The Chairman of DPC BAI Aceh Tamiang, Syamsul, accompanied by Secretary Saut Isak P. Simanjuntak, emphasized that the press is a fundamental pillar of democracy and serves as the frontline in safeguarding transparency, justice, and public interest. Therefore, any form of pressure, intimidation, or suppression against journalists is unacceptable.
“We extend our congratulations on World Press Freedom Day to all members of the press. The press must stand firm as a bearer of truth, not as a tool of interests. Press freedom is a fundamental human right that must be protected collectively,” stated the Chairman.
DPC BAI Aceh Tamiang also urged all parties, including the government and the wider community, to respect journalistic work and to promote greater openness in access to information.
Furthermore, DPC BAI emphasized that World Press Freedom Day should serve as a moment of reflection to strengthen legal protection for journalists and to improve the quality of reporting so that it remains balanced, factual, and ethical.
